COLDATER, MI (WTVB) – A Coldwater Township man was arraigned Friday afternoon in Branch County District Court after allegedly threatening to kill his mother with a hunting knife the night before.
Michigan State Police say the incident took place in the 400 block of River Road in Coldwater Township late Thursday night.
42-year-old Mark Hoopingardner has been charged with a felony of assault with a dangerous weapon and interference with electronic communication.
Troopers say besides threatening to kill her, Hoopingardner allegedly took his mother’s cell phone in order to keep her from dialing 911.
Court documents indicate the mother suffered a lacerated hand as she struggled to get the knife away from her son who had earlier come home in an upset mood.
State Police say the mother was able to escape the home by convincing her son that she needed to go to the hospital.
Hoopingardner accompanied her to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital where he was treated for a self inflicted knife wound. While at the hospital, the mother called the police to report the assault and Hoopingardner was later arrested.
Bond has been set at $50,000. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for September 13, with a preliminary exam scheduled for September 19, 2018.
