UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) — Over 1-million people are expected to take a last minute summer trip this Labor Day weekend.
AAA of Michigan say although gas prices are over 40 to 45-cents higher than they were last year, that’s not stopping many vacationers.
The average gas price is around $2.80 a gallon, and GasBuddy analyst Patrick DeHaan says he doesn’t expect to see a spike ahead of the holiday.
Officials are reminding drivers to be safe on the roadways and note that Labor Day traffic deaths were up in 2017 compared to 2016, with 27-percent of crashes involving alcohol.
Also, to keep the roads stress-free and hopefully traffic-free, road crews are removing many orange barrels this weekend.
The Michigan Department of Transportation say they’re suspending about two-thirds of their projects from 3 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Tuesday.
However, there will still be extra police patrols throughout the weekend looking for distracted, speeding or drunk drivers and keeping travelers safe this Labor Day.
