UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) — Many students are moving into their on or off-campus dorm rooms, connecting with friends, unpacking their belongings, and prepping for classes, but what many are not doing is looking into their fire safety procedures.
President of E.S.C.A.P.E Michael McLeieer says whether in a classroom or dorm room it’s always important to keep safety in mind.
He says students should always know where the nearest exits and windows are, know how where the fire alarms are and how to use them, make sure dorm rooms have working smoke detectors, and never use the elevator in an emergency situation.
When it comes to making food on their own for the first time, McLeieer says the biggest rule is “stand by your pan.”
He says some college students get distracted or try to multitask while cooking which is one of the leading causes of preventable fires.
Students should also check to see if microwave ovens and other high wattage appliances are allowed in their dorm room, and always plug them directly into the wall, not into extension cords or power strips.
