MICHIGAN (WKZO AM/FM) — A new safety study is ranking Michigan number 1 when it comes to threats of violence in public schools.
The Educator’s School Safety Network compiled data from the past school year and ranked Michigan at the top of the list based on relative population, with 196 threats, and 13 actual incidents reported.
Threats are defined as bomb, gun, written, or social media threats with the intention to do harm, but they are not followed through.
The safety organization categorized incidents as student suicides, guns found on campuses, shots fired or shootings, and thwarted plots like the Paw Paw High School incident.
Co-Founder Amy Klinger says it’s time for this to get more attention and for teachers to get involved in the laws being made involving safety at schools.
Many of the threats seem to be copycats, with 43-percent of them nationwide occurring just 30 days after the Parkland Florida school shooting.
Some local districts are starting to take action by increasing school security and providing more teacher training programs.
The rankings of other states can be found here and the full study with more information can be found on the organization’s website.
