KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — While new housing projects are going up are downtown, the issue of homelessness in Kalamazoo was brought to the fore this week following the Commission’s attempt to decriminalize park rules on Monday.
Kalamazoo City Commissioner Don Cooney says addressing the homeless issue is part of the city’s ambitious new Shared Prosperity Initiative.
He says they have been focusing on children in the initial stages, but he says maybe they should put more of an emphasis on this problem.
He says they will never entirely solve the problem, but they can address it.
He says there are a lot of agencies working on the homeless issue in Kalamazoo, but there is little coordination. He says they need a master plan with everyone working to achieve it.
The small tent city filled with homeless protestors that had been on City Hall Steps has moved across the street, into Bronson Park where the ground is softer, its shady and more comfortable.
