KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — It looks like the Kalamazoo County Commission will join a number of other counties, cities, and states and seek compensation from big drug firms for the explosion in opioid overdoses and deaths.
Splitting down party lines, Commissioners voted Tuesday evening to open negotiations with an attorney who has already joined the class action suit and has other clients.
They will use the same legal strategies that forced big tobacco to settle for billions to compensate local health departments for diseases caused by smoking.
Commissioner Scott McGraw called it “a frivolous lawsuit” but legal experts say the county could gain hundreds of thousands of dollars to combat opioid abuse.
