KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Voters may have approved passage of a new Senior Millage during the primary election, but it will be a while before seniors who are currently on waiting lists for assistance programs or meals on wheels will see the benefit.
“Say Yes to Seniors” campaign Co-Chair Lucinda Stinson says first they have to collect the money, but the next tax bills don’t go out until the end of this year.
She says decisions also have to be made on which programs will be funded and priorities set.
There will be a committee that will review the request proposals from different agencies that want to require these funds so they can provide the specific services.
She says they will want to make sure they are getting the most bang for their bucks.
There will be criteria that each agency would have to meet and report on to prove that they are meeting the needs of seniors.
While it will substantially improve the ability to expand programs, they are under no illusion that the millage generated will provide enough for every need.
