OTSEGO, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Could Otsego be next in line after Rockford and Parchment on dealing with PFAs in drinking water?
The Allegan County community has had to deal with toxic pollutants for years stemming from waste coming from now-closed paper plants along the Kalamazoo River. Last month, the state DEQ announced the testing of 60 residential wells and 12 monitoring wells, and a town hall meeting this past April was intended to address concerns by residents about the area’s water supply. Such concerns were forwarded to the office of US Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing).
In response to that meeting, the Allegan County Health Department is staging an Otsego Area Environmental House Open House. Originally set for this Thursday, officials announced on Wednesday that, due to venue requirements, the three-hour session is now planned for next Wednesday, August 8th, beginning at 4 PM at Otsego United Methodist Church off of East Allegan Street.
According to the Kathy Yonkers-Wright, the ACHD Public Information Officer, Stabenow’s office brought a number of state and federal agencies together “and it was determined that this open house would be a venue to provide information and updates on the agencies’ progress towards meeting the deliverables that were committed on during the April 14, 2018 Otsego Towns Hall meeting.”
