LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan Supreme Court ruled Friday that school districts can ban guns, and can stop anyone who plans to bring guns onto a school campus.
The cases involve the Clio and Ann Arbor schools.
The majority of Justices agreed with a lower court ruling that unless and until the legislature specifically preempts school districts from banning guns, schools rule.
Clio Superintendent Fletcher Spears says there simply is no place in schools for guns. Gun groups insisted that schools were required to obey state law.
The 4 to 3 majority said if the legislature wants to specifically act to allow guns in schools it can. That seems unlikely.
Kalamazoo has always maintained a strong stand against guns in schools and discouraged parents from bringing them.
