HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A stray firework may have caused the July 7, 2018, fire that destroyed much of an 8-unit apartment building in the Stratford Way complex, according to Holland Fire Capt. Chris Tinney.
“All other sources have been eliminated,” Tinney said. “It appears the fire started on the exterior of the building, on the balcony, ignited some materials that were on the balcony, and eventually ignited the building.”
No one was injured during the incident, which left residents of all eight units looking for new homes until the building, on Abbey Court, is repaired.
Tinney roughtly estimated the cost of damages at “about $100,000,” noting that is a ballpark figure.
He said anyone in possession of fireworks is responsible for using them safely and within the law — and that they are still being set off in and around Holland, though state law limits use to the day before a federal holiday, the day of the holiday and the day after.
He said fire officials are working with police detectives to find out who is responsible for the Abbey Court incident.
