KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A former WMU basketball player is heading to prison, but not for murder, after a student was fatally shot inside his Kalamazoo apartment.
Monday morning, 21-year-old Joeviair Kennedy was sentenced to between 17.5 and 40 years behind bars after he was convicted of armed robbery and felony firearm charges during a drug rip off incident back in December of 2016.
However, Kennedy was not found guilty of murder, unlike his partner and former high school teammate.
Jordan Waire was sentenced to life in prison last month for the murder and robbery of student Jacob Jones.
Jones was killed in his SoHo apartment after Waire demanded drugs and pistol whipped Jones, causing the gun to go off and fatally hit Jones in the head.
Waire was convicted of the murder charge, unlike Kennedy, because he was holding the gun during the incident.
