ALMA, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) — Michigan State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Alma, according to a statement by the state-police agency.
Authorities said a MSP trooper from the Lakeview Post responded to a domestic violence call with two Alma police officers at approximately 8:50 p.m., Tuesday, July 10, involving a woman and her adult son.
The woman had escaped the home by the time officers arrived, according to the statement, and police spent an hour attempting to contact the suspect inside the home before they entered. Once inside, officers were “immediately confronted by the suspect who was armed with a crossbow” according to the state’s email.
Two of the three officers fired on the suspect, wounding him in the shoulder, police said.
As the MSP email put it: “MSP personnel are required to follow strict guidelines in the discharge of weapons. MSP policy permits officers to point or discharge a firearm in self-defense or defense of another when he or she reasonably believes there is imminent danger of death or great bodily harm.”
A full and complete investigation of this incident is currently underway by the MSP First District Investigative Response Team, police said, adding, “when completed, it will be forwarded to the Gratiot County Prosecutor’s Office for review.”
All three police officers are on administrative leave during the investigation, according to each agency’s policy.
