LANSING (WHTC-AM/FM) — Four people died in three separate crashes over the 2018 Fourth of July holiday, according to preliminary reports collect by Michigan State Police.
Three of the four victims were pedestrians, according to data shared by MSP in an email to media Thursday.
Of the three deadly crashes:• Three victims were pedestrians• Police were unaable to determine whether seatbelts were used in one of the fatal crashes• Alcohol use did not appear to be a factor in any of the crashes
MSP defines the 2018 Fourth of July holiday period as starting at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3, and ending at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4, 2018.
In 2017, MSP records show 14 people died in 14 separate crashes during the Fourth of July holiday, which spanned a weekend and covered four days total.
“These numbers are preliminary and only reflect those fatalities reported to the Michigan State Police as of 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 5,” said Spl/F/Lt. Jim Flegel, MSP traffic safety specialist, in MSP’s emailed statemetn. “We continue to urge motorists to be aware of your surroundings at all times, and give both pedestrians and bicyclists plenty of room on the roadways. Never operate a vehicle while impaired on alcohol or drugs, and avoid all distractions.”
