UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) — An excessive Heat Warning is in effect through 8pm Sunday night. It will be some of the most uncomfortable and most dangerous heat we have seen for a while, with a heat index near 110-degrees.
Inspector Chris Bush with Michigan Emergency Management says take care of yourself. Drink plenty of water, stay in air-conditioning if you can and take it easy if you go outdoors.
The DEQ has issued an air quality alert for the lakeshore counties and for Kent and Cass County, asking people to hold off until the evening to mow lawns and fill gas tanks, to cut the amount of smog in the air generated by the heat and humidity.
If you need to get cool in the big city and get out of the heat, you can always head out to the mall or go see a movie.
The City of Battle Creek has decided to waive the fee at Willard Beach, inviting neighbors and visitors to beat the heat gates will be open from 8am to 8:30 pm Sunday.
The City of Kalamazoo will be opening up fire hydrants around the community for kids who want an instant splash pad. From 1pm until dusk. You can also request to have one near you open. They have attachments to turn the gush of water from a hydrant into something less intimidating.
The city also has a water park located on Florence near Burrell for all citizens to use and the Kik Pool at Upjohn Park is also currently open to the public.
They plan to open hydrants from 1pm until dusk at the following locations.• Back end of Interfaith (building 1038) far NW corner• Burrell and Lawrence• Krom and Clay• Washington and March• Charlotte and Sherwood at Roosevelt Apartments• Clarence and Jackson• Norway and Princeton• Fairbanks and Center• Church and Norway• Elizabeth mid-block between Cobb and Westnedge
With an excessive heat warning in effect until tomorrow (Sunday) evening, Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller says drivers need to think twice about leaving a pet or a child in the vehicle, even if they say it’s for a short time.
At these temperatures, it does not take long to turn a car into a death trap.
If you do see a child or animal alone in a car, call 911 immediately.
