LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Snyder has signed legislation requiring that motorists give cyclists at least three feet of room on the left and right whenever possible.
Bike Safety regulations were first proposed by former Kalamazoo State Representative Tom George years ago and languished until they were reintroduced by State Senator Margaret O’Brien after Kalamazoo’s biking tragedy.
She had proposed a 5-foot distance like the one adopted in Kalamazoo and Portage but she will take this compromise approved by the State House.
There is a second measure that requires that an hour be spent in Drivers Education classes teaching about the rights of pedestrians, and how to drive while they also use the roads.
Michigan will become the 40th state to adopt such a safe spacing regulation when it takes effect in 90 days.
