KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Local trail advocates have been talking about it for years, linking local trails together to eventually provide a route that stretches from South Haven to Port Huron, coast to coast.
The long range plan is to create four major trails that cross different parts of the state. They are called the Great Lake to Lake trails and they currently exist in bits and peices.
Just this year, a critical link through Downtown Kalamazoo was opened connecting the Kal-Haven and Kalamazoo Valley River trail with the trails on the eastern part of town.
They have also pushed the trail eastward toward Battle Creek’s Linear Park trail system, but there remains a large gap between the systems.
This week trail officials from eight counties met and set the goal to complete the trail by the end of summer next year, and hold an inaugural coast to coast ride in September, 2019.
They also talked about managing it once its done.
