KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Supporters of a millage request to convince voters to approve a senior millage in Kalamazoo County launched their campaign last night at the Arcadia Brewing Company and drew a sizable crowd on a very hot day in June.
The County is asking for a third of a mill to fully support programs for the growing aging population in Kalamazoo who are on fixed incomes and need a little help to stay out of nursing homes.
Campaign Co-Chair Lucinda Stinson says it doesn’t create any new programs, it just increases funding for programs that have suffered cuts and that now have long wait lists because of the growing number of senior residents.
They are asking for approval of a third of a mill on the August Primary.
So far no organized opposition has surfaced.
Kalamazoo is one of the few Counties in the State of Michigan that does not have a senior millage.
The County is asking for .35 mills, or about $35 a year for a person with a $100,000 home.
