LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Rick Snyder has issued a disaster declaration for Houghton and Menominee Counties , and will be sending in the National Guard to help with road repairs caused by flash flooding this past weekend.
M-DOT’s Dan Weingarten says many major and a number of secondary roads have become impassable due to sink holes and wash outs. Some entire communities are no longer accessible.
Residents of Houghton are hardy and used to adversity, living in a part of the country where the winters are severe, but they have never seen damage like this.
The state has established a specific website for those seeking assistance in the wake of the severe thunderstorms, that dropped 7 to 8 inches of rain on the area in just a few hours.
