COMSTOCK (WKZO AM/FM) — They held a special ceremony in Comstock on the one year anniversary of the death of Fire Chief Ed Switalski, revealing plans for a permanent memorial at the fire station.
It would include a curved wall near the station flagpole and a bronze statue of the man they called Fast Eddie. They are starting a fundraising campaign.
Switalski was killed by a driver who was texting and speeding when he came upon emergency vehicles responding to a call about a problem along I-94, went out of control and hit the Chief, who died at the scene. That driver was subsequently charged and convicted.
Since then they have waged a campaign to promote state laws requiring that drivers give emergency vehicles at the side of the road a wide berth and slow down as they pass.
