KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Joeviair Kennedy’s gamble paid off.
The former WMU basketball player turned down a plea bargain and took his chances with a jury, facing a murder charge for the December 2016 death of WMU Student Jake Jones during a drug rip-off at the SoHo apartments on South Howard.
The jury did find him guilty of armed robbery and a felony gun charge, but returned with a not guilty plea to the murder charge.
Co-defendant Jordan Waire was convicted last month of murder.
He was handling the gun when he pistol whipped Jones and the gun went off, killing him.
Kennedy will be sentenced on July 16th.
