LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — A couple of the bills from that big sexual abuse package introduced because of the Larry Nassar scandal that expands the time that victims can seek civil damages against their abusers has been signed by the Lt. Governor.
Currently the time given to victims is so short that they don’t realize they have been abused by then, or are too young to do much about it.
The final version extends that 10 to 15 years and will benefit most the Larry Nassar victims.
Lt. Governor Brian Calley signed it because the Governor is overseas.
Kalamazoo Survivor Rachael Denhollander is disappointed that lawmakers tailored it for the Nassar survivors.
They originally drafted a bill that would apply to all victims, and got the Senate to approve it. That bill ran into sharp opposition from major institutions who feared being buried in lawsuits.
There are many other bills in that sexual assault package still headed for the Governor’s Desk.
Where was the Governor while all this was taking place in Lansing? Governor Rick Snyder was marking the 25th anniversary of joint military cooperation between the Michigan National Guard and the Latvian Army.
They renamed a street on one of their bases, “Michigan Avenue” and Tuesday they dedicated the street.
Latvia is a small country bordering Russia and the Baltic Sea.
