SOUTH HAVEN (WKZO AM/FM) –South Haven is going above and beyond what most communities do to battle a pernicious invasive species that has been identified in the community.
They have begun posting signs around outgrowths of Japanese Knotweed, directing the public not to try to remove the plants themselves but to let professionals hired by the city eradicate the plants.
Attempts to remove the plant, which can reproduce from a thumb-nail sized portion of the stem or root, can just accelerate its spread.
The city has issued a map of where the outgrowths have been identified and a fact sheet on the plant.
They are warning residents not to mow, cut, chop or pull the plant out.
