OTSEGO TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — A drug suspect who managed to elude police several times Wednesday morning is in custody now after he allegedly carjacked a Kalamazoo County woman, injuring her in the process.
The suspect was a passenger in a car that was pulled over for a traffic violation on U.S. 131 right around 2:30 am near the Allegan/Kalamazoo County line.
The officers wanted to search the car for drugs and had begun removing the four occupants when one of the passengers jumped behind the wheel of the rental car and sped off, briefly dragging a Plainwell Officer and a Deputy who both suffered minor injuries.
Soon after, the suspect was spotted near D Avenue by an Otsego Police officer who gave chase.
The suspect parked the car in a driveway and fled on foot. A K-9 search continued much of the day.
Drugs and a gun were found in the car.
The suspect, described as a young African American male finally resurfaced near Ravine and West B Avenue in the evening where deputies say he carjacked a 59-year-old woman in her driveway, running over her ankle as he fled.
Allegan Deputies spotted the stolen vehicle headed northbound on U.S. 131 and deployed stop-sticks to finally take him into custody.
He is being held on numerous charges in Allegan County and may be charged in Kalamazoo County as well.
