LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan State Senate has approved the sexual assault reforms approved by the State House earlier this month, in response to the Larry Nassar scandal. There are over two dozen bills in the package, including ten that originated in the Senate. It now heads to the Governor’s Desk.
Now a bi-partisan group of Senators that includes Margaret O’Brien of Portage, Rick Jones of Grand Ledge and Minority Leader Jim Ananich of Flint to consider a package of bills designed to address the issue of School Security.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our children,” O’Brien said. “This legislation gives Michigan schools the chance to prevent the next tragedy before it happens. It is our responsibility to act.”
The package includes a funding request for more School Resource Officers, psychologists, and counselors and would fund improvements to school buildings that heighten security.
What it doesn’t address is the issue of guns, a topic that is apparently just too politically volatile to debate in an election year without sabotaging the rest of their efforts.
