HAMILTON TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — Van Buren County Sheriff deputies are releasing the names of the victims involved in a fatal head-on crash that occurred Friday along M-51.
Deputies say the 25-year-old Daria Malaga from Elkhart was pronounced dead at the scene and her 2-month-old son Xavier Martinez was rushed to the hospital where he later died.
The crash happened around 9 p.m. Friday near Decatur when Malaga’s Chrysler Pacifica strayed across the centerline, but she swerved back.
But a 42-year-old woman from Battle Creek driving a Jeep Wrangler in the opposite lane took evasive action, swinging across the centerline and right into the SUV.
The other driver was airlifted from the crash scene and is reported in stable condition.
Tests are being conducted and the results will be submitted to the Prosecutor’s office.
