LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Legislation that was the second wave of bills to result from Kalamazoo’s bike tragedy has gone to the Governor’s desk.
The Michigan Senate has signed off on House changes to new biking rules requiring that drivers give bikes headed in the same direction at least 3-feet of leeway.
The Senate had originally approved a 5-foot gap sponsored by Senator Margaret O’Brien of Portage, but the House decided that was too much to ask in some communities with narrower streets.
The two bill package also requires that driver’s education courses spend an hour talking about cyclist and pedestrian safety.
Governor Rick Snyder is expected to sign it.
