OSHTEMO (WKZO AM/FM) — Despite double turn lanes, repaving and a complete redesign and reconstruction, the intersection of West Main Street and Drake Road remains the most dangerous in the county.
Michigan Department of Transportation officials held an open house Wednesday evening discussing ways to improve traffic on West Main in Oshtemo as the commercial corridor continues to grow.
MDOT manager Pete Pfeiffer says they hope that sequencing the traffic signals along West Main within the next year will be one improvement that is affordable and should improve safety in the area.
One theory is that the complex nature of the lights, turns and driveways in this part of town is an invitation for disaster in this age of driver distraction.
Pfeiffer agrees but says it would take a program of closing driveways and roadway simplification to change that.
He says they plan to take the input they got from Wednesday’s session, come up with a few other ideas and hold another open house in a few months.
