LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Detroit News is reporting that Michigan Governor Snyder is about to impose the strictest drinking water rules in the United States.
The new standards would require that every municipality that has lead water lines would have to replace them by 2040.
The proposal is drawing fire from many local officials who say the rules are an overreaction to Flint and that corrosion controls take care of that problem,
On Monday, the Kalamazoo City Commission will consider budgeting nearly $2-million dollars to replace lead service lines over the next year.
Most of the money is coming from the The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and some from the Foundation for Excellence.
At the rate the city was replacing lead lines prior to the Flint water crisis, it would have taken 100 years to replace them all.
With the grants it will take about 20 years, which is within the Governor’s deadline.
