KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The water covering Homer Stryker Field is too shallow for water polo but way too deep for baseball. The floodwater would however be perfect for sport fishing, as all the earthworms rising from the submerged outfield had attracted a lot of fish.
And despite the dry weather the last few days, the depth of the water at the old ball field will rise overnight tonight as the Kalamazoo River crests at about nine feet.
That’s about two feet below where it crested in February during the record flooding, but still high enough that it could flood a few more streets in the city.
There are stretches of Ray, Ampersee and Dutton that have standing water, and there may be more by morning.
Merrill Park in Comstock is now one big boat launch, but with the faster current in the river, canoeing and kyacking might not be the best idea. dicey
