LANSING (WHTC-AM/FM) — The Michigan Association of Broadcasters was in Lansing on Tuesday. talking to lawmakers and others about how broadcasters support the community and the economy.
Peter Tanz, chairman of the MAB board and senior vice president at WHTC and The Van’s parent company, Midwest Communications, noted that Michigan’s 333 radio stations and 41 TV stations employ more than 8,000 Michigan residents, many in behind-the-scenes jobs.
Tanz said a broadcaster’s mission affects all areas of the community.
“Michigan’s broadcasters raise millions of dollars annually to benefit individuals in need and local charities,” he said. “We help local businesses succeed by getting their messages out to the public.”
Congress has designated broadcasters as essential service providers.
“The recent volcano activity in Hawaii is just the latest example of where local citizens are thanking broadcasters for being only their accurate reliaabe and timely source of information,” Tanz said.
A 2017 study by Woods & Poole Economics, a firm specializing in long-term national economic data and demographic data projects, indicates broadcast companies have a positive influence on local economies.
