LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — It could be the most popular item on the fall ballot…if its supporters can successfully wrap up their petition drive and get them to Lansing in time.
It’s not recreational marijuana or the measure to end gerrymandering…it’s called “Promote the Vote” and it’s a collection of election reforms that the League of Women Voters and other non-partisan groups want to secure by putting them into the State Constitution.
League President Judy Karandjeff says it includes straight party voting, no-excuse absentee balloting, making it easier to register to vote and a few others that other states have adopted, like protecting the right to a secret ballot.
A new EPIC MRA poll shows that given a chance to vote on it, 77% would say yes, just 13% would say no and the rest are undecided. Pollster Bernie Porn says it’s strongly supported statewide, regardless of party or gender.
