LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Bee populations have been crashing for some time and one local state representative thinks it’s time for the state government to come to the aid of farmers who depend on bees and other pollinators.
Republican David Maturen says it is a billion dollar problem for Michigan farmers that is a particular issue in west Michigan’s orchards.
His bill would set up a Pollinator Health Advisory Council made up of experts who would advise the DNR.
A companion bill would create a fund controlled by the DNR to finance projects to support pollinator habitats.
They say populations of honey bees are crashing and it’s time for them to lend a hand.
