PENN TOWNSHIP and LOWELL (WKZO AM/FM) — A freak accident in Cass County has claimed the life of a 73-year-old Vandalia man after a tree cutting project.
Cass County Deputies say that Robert Wright was cutting a tree down on his property in the 58,000 block of White Temple Road in Penn Township just after noon on Tuesday.
They say it appears the tree fell over into another tree, which was uprooted and both trees struck Wright, causing what were described as “extreme injuries.”
Emergency personel had to extract wright from the two trees. Resuscitation efforts failed.
Another strange occurance involving trees killed an elderly West Michigan man mid-afternoon Tuesday near Lowell.
Sgt. Eric Rakow says 90-year-old Howard Thumser was killed when a tree fell on an SUV, driven by his wife as they traveled east along Grand River Drive.
The tree was part of a domino effect where one tree took down another, with one stricking the vehicle.
Judith Rakow received treatment for non-life threatening injuries.
