KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The WMU Board of Trustees has approved a 3% increase to room and board rates on campus for the next academic year.
Vice-President for Student Affairs Diane Anderson says it brings the total for a 15-meal plan option to just under $10,000 for the full school year.
She says they try to keep the cost of on-campus housing just a little below what the equivalent costs would be for living off-campus, because students who live on campus tend to have fewer distractions and better Grade Point Averages.
The new rates will take effect with fall term.
In the wake of the Larry Nassar Scandal, the WMU Board of Trustees has also approved a new policy requiring additional training and screening for University employees who work with minors.
Director of Pre-College Programming Erica Carr told the trustees that given the increased scrutiny that it will be better for everyone involved if they ratchet up the policy to make sure that those who work with minors have a clearer and more comprehensive set of directions.
There are a number of facilities, daycare centers, pre-college curriculums, classes with student teachers and others may all have generate contact between minors and university employees.
