KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Seven West Michigan counties are getting flunking grades from the American Lung Association in their latest study on air quality.
Allegan, Berrien, Cass, Kalamazoo, Kent, Muskegon and Ottawa counties all get F-grades for their high rates of low-quality air.
Report author Janice Nolen says a lot of pollutants contribute to the mix.
A lot of it floats over from Wisconsin, Illinois and Gary, Indiana, mixes with the warm moist summer air and local car exhaust and becomes ozone.
Grand Rapids is ranked the 34th most polluted city in the nation.
