LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — A bi-partisan group of Michigan lawmakers have just submitted 17-new pieces of legislation as a result of their own recently completed investigation into the Larry Nassar sex scandal.
They range from creating a new 25-year felony for doctors to engage in a sex crimes that they claim are a medical procedure, to requiring informed consent for invasive treatments on minors. There are many other proposals that they say complement other existing or proposed pieces of legislation.
One of the lead investigators, Rep. Klint Kesto calls it a comprehensive response to the scandal. Co-Chair Kim LaSata says Larry Nassar was able to take advantage of the girls because most had no idea what he was doing was criminal.
Kalamazoo Rep. Jon Hoadley says the goal is to prevent what happened from ever occurring again.
These bills are in addition to the ten bill package approved by the State Senate, 6 brand new proposals that came from Senate Democrats Wedmesday, and a few bills proposed individually by House Members, bringing the grand total of bills inspired by Larry Nassar up somewhere in the mid-30’s.
