KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — The air should be easier to breathe, especially this fall in northern Kalamazoo, now that it appears the Kalamazoo Township Board is going to approve a tougher ban on outdoor burning.
Township Attorney Roxanne Seeber says barbeques and fire pits will still be allowed, but the plan is to do away with other open fires.
That includes leaf burning, trash burning in burn barrels, burning branches and lawn debris, and burn piles.
Trustee Steve Leuty says it’s just not healthy, that parts of the township on some fall days would look and smell more like a war zone.
Supervisor Don Martin says open burning may be okay out in the country, but they are really in the metro area with compact neighborhoods and it’s just not suitable.
The Township board formally received a draft of the ordinance that will be posted at the Township website this week.
The board will take up the ordinance for final approval on May 14th.
