LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan lawmakers get back to work this week and the 2019 Budget will be high on the agenda.
There has also been talk that the Republican majority may take up a bill legalizing recreational marijuana before voters do, especially if passage appears to be a foregone conclusion.
Keeping it off the ballot prevents it from become a wedge issue favoring Democrats in November.
Kalamazoo State House Rep. John Hoadley says he has not heard of anyone working on it however.
It’s been estimated that it could boost voter turnout by 3%. Hoadley says 3% becomes 6% if only 50% turn out to vote. The group behind the petition drive,
The Coalition to Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol has already turned in 100,000 more signatures than is required to make the ballot and are waiting for certification from the Secretary of State.
If they get the Green light from the Secretary of State, the Legislature would have 40 days to enact it. If they do not act, it goes on the ballot.
