LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s already a crime to use Ransomware in Michigan. It’s now a crime just to possess a copy of the software. The Governor signed the bill Monday.
Ransomware is a particularly loathsome cybercrime that permits the criminal to block the data of a business, an institution, a hospital or an individual until a ransom is paid.
Co-sponsor Brandt Iden of Oshtemo says it allows police to go after those who sell and distribute the software, as well as those who use it. Simple possession of the software will be a three year felony in Michigan.
Ransomware attacks can be more than an inconvenience, it can threaten the health of a business or life or death if introduced into a healthcare setting.
