LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — The Governor has activated the state’s Emergency Operations Center to be ready to respond and watch for falling space debris, as China’a Tiangong-1 space station is about to break up on reentry sometime this April Fool’s Day/Easter weekend.
Capt. Chris Kelenske says they have a protocol prepared for all sorts of different emergencies,
The 8.5 ton, school bus sized tube is not designed for reentry into the atmosphere and while most of it is expected to burn up in the atmosphere, some chunks of it may survive the fiery ride back into the atmosphere.
Kelenske says as they track the satellite, they will be able to give a warning of where and when it will fall about two hours before it happens.
The odds of any debris actually striking any of us are more remote than winning that 500-million dollar lottery jackpot, and a lot less pleasant.
