LANSING, MI (WTVB) – A bill being backed by 58th District State Representative Eric Leutheuser (R-Hillsdale) would allow schools, churches and charities to keep more of their own fundraising revenue.
The bill has advanced to the House floor after being approved by the House Tax Policy Committee.
It would exempt a qualifying non-profit’s first $10,000 in fundraising sales from Michigan’s sales tax. The measure would also apply to tax-exempt organizations raising less than $25,000 a year through sales.
Leutheuser says the current sales tax exemption, set at $5,000 in annual fundraising sales, has not been increased in nearly 25 years and that the change is long overdue.
Leutheuser said the issue was brought to his attention by a constituent from his district.
