KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County’s Prosecutor may have a decision to make about a 56-year-old driver who is being held for causing a crash while drunk and fleeing from officers that killed a Kalamazoo couple.
PSO’s were dispatched to a report of a man in a grey truck armed with a gun along Washington Avenue late Wednesday morning.
The suspect, from Kalamazoo, fled from officers north on Portage Street at such speeds and with such recklessness that they immediately broke off the chase for safety’s sake.
A half mile later the suspect plowed into a car making a left at Crosstown.
The couple inside, 62-year-old Mary and 66-year-old Juan Muniz both died at the scene.
The suspect fled on foot but was quickly captured.
He is being held for fleeing and eluding and driving drunk causing death. If found guilty, the maximum the man would get is 15-years, but sometimes in such cases 2nd degree murder charges are pursued if the facts dictate. That could mean up to life.
The suspect could be formally charged and bail set on Thursday.
