PITTSFORD, MI (WTVB) – Pittsford Area Schools will be closed Thursday after police discovered a hand gun in a student locker and a possible destructive device.
A 13-year-old boy was taken into custody and turned over to the Hillsdale County Probate Court system Wednesday afternoon.
The gun was found after school officials got a tip. Pittsford schools were then placed into what is called a Hard Lock Down.
The student responsible for the handgun was immediately controlled by school officials and the Sheriff’s Office. A short time later the school was released from the lock down.
While conducting a thorough search of the student’s possessions, the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office says a possible destructive device was discovered. The device was taken off from school property and later rendered safe.
Pittsford School Official’s cleared the school a few minutes early and moved all students and staff outside. All Pittsford Area School events for the evening were cancelled.
No other devices or weapons were found during the search.
No other threats were identified to the school or the Pittsford Community during the early portion of the investigation which is ongoing.
The residence of the 13 year old was also searched for additional evidence.
