LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) – Governor Rick Snyder has declared a state of emergency in 17 Michigan counties, including all of the counties in Southwest Michigan except for Van Buren and Calhoun Counties because of the recent flooding.
It also includes the cities of Grand Rapids and Lansing.
Now that damage assessments are complete, communities can apply for up to $100,000 to reimburse the costs of damage to public infrastructure and flood management but that doesn’t help homeowners.
Kalamazoo County estimates the damage in Kalamazoo County totals $2.5 million, which is way down from the $11-million caused by flooding in 2008.
Monday night Kalamazoo Township Manager Dexter Mitchell informed Trustees that efforts continue locally to come to the assistance of the 100 flood victims they had.
The Township board also approved allocating $8,500 to cover the cost of dumpsters placed in the Lakewood neighborhood for homeowners to use for free.
Mitchell says he wants to hear from any resident who needs help, or they can call 211, where they will be assigned a case worker to take them through the process.
