LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Rick Snyder has signed a bill increasing the basic fee cellphone owners pay to help support 9-1-1 services, from 19 to 25-cents for each phone number used by a customer, family or business.
Many counties have local voter approved surcharges that are over and above that fee to support local 911 dispatch.
The funding would be used to help local systems upgrade their technology to be able to receive text, video and and other digital media.
Snyder says don’t think of it as a fee hike, think of it as an investment in safety.
Local municipalities are free to raise that fee to 25-cents without voter approval.
