LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s a free fishing weekend in Michigan but stay off the ice.
Twice a year the Michigan Department of Natural Resources waives license fees, and vehicles will be able to enter state parks and use boating sites without a recreational passport.
It’s all in an effort to introduce new anglers and children to the sport. The problem this year is the weather in southern Michigan.
DNR spokesman Tristan Cole says it may not be an problem in northern Michigan, but safety is an issue.
The on again, off again snow and warm spells have weakened the ice and it may not be safe.
In fact the DNR has ordered fisherman to remove their ice shanties from Lake St. Clair because of the weather. You can still fish from shore.
