LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Critics are pouncing on a Detroit News story that revealed the working agreement between Attorney General Bill Schuette and Bill Forsyth . They say it shows that it is not the “independent investigation” of the Nassar scandal that Schuette said it would be.
The agreement calls for Forsyth to serve at the pleasure of the A.G. and will be required to clear all public statements, findings and news releases through the Attorney General’s office.
MSU Presidential Advisor Jim Blanchard says Schuette has already injected politics into the probe when he invited news crews along on a raid to obtain documents early this month.
Interim President John Engler has withdrawn his endorsement of Schuette, and also accused him of politicizing the probe.
The Chair of the State Democratic Party is calling for someone else to take over the investigation, charging that it’s a conflict of interest for Schuette to oversee an investigation, when he could be considered a potential target of the investigation. They call it just one of many conflicts of interest that Schuette has.
The agreement specifically limits the investigation to Michigan State University.
Party Chair Brandon Dillon says “Michiganders have had enough BS to last a lifetime and deserve someone who puts truth over politics and justice ahead of their personal political ambitions.”
Schuette Spokesperson Andrea Bitely says the contract language is standard and says Forsyth is definitely leading the investigation.
