LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — A state senator is warning Southwest Michigan residents about a possible phone scam.
Senator Tonya Schuitmaker says scammers are calling homeowners and businesses posing as a utility company, and demanding immediate payment over the phone, or else their services will be shut off.
She says the callers can even alter the caller ID so it looks legitimate and act as a utility representative or a company voicemail.
Actual utility companies say they will never call customers asking for payments over the phone or ask for a specific form of payment.
Victims of the scam should call their bank and the police.
