LANSING, MI (WTVB) – You might soon be paying a dime deposit on bottled water and juice as lawmakers look for ways to increase recycling in Michigan.
Michigan residents have paid the deposit on carbonated beverages and beer since 1976. The rate of return has been around 97-percent for those cans and bottles. Kalamazoo Democratic State Representative Jon Hoadley is sponsoring the bill in the Michigan House, and says it makes sense to expand what’s eligible for the deposit.
Governor Snyder last week also called for boosting recycling in Michigan by adding recycling bins at all state facilities. The Governor also wants more done to educate people about recycling and hopes to change laws to slow down the development of landfills.
