CHARLOTTESVILLE (WKZO AM/FM) — For the second time in less than a year, a gathering of Republican Congressmen away from the Capitol has ended violently with casualties.
An Amtrak train loaded with GOP lawmakers headed for a retreat in West Virginia with their families hit a garbage truck outside of Charlottesville. Some of the cars were derailed.
The truck was ripped apart and the driver killed. Five others were injured but will recover.
Michigan Congressman Mike Bishop, who was also at the ball practice last summer that was attacked by a gunman, says this was eerily reminiscent.
Fred Upton says several of the Lawmakers, who are also doctors, rushed to the aid of the men in the truck, and began CPR on the driver, but he was too badly injured.
They also had a chaplain on board who performed last rights.
Six members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation were on board, including Upton, Bill Huizenga and Tim Walberg.
